Coca revisited

Posted In: Health & Wellbeing

In July 2024 the WHO Expert Committee on Drug Dependence began a ‘Critical  review of the coca leaf’. This is to establish with as much clarity as possible the medical harms caused by consuming coca leaf in its natural form, and products made therefrom, like teas or powders. A big effort has been made by the Bolivian government the sponsor of this initiative, to distinguish the leaf from its illustrious offspring, powder cocaine.

In support of the review the journal Drugs, Habits and Social Policy has launched a Special Issue, “A future with coca: embedding indigenous Andean knowledge on the medical, spiritual and recreational opportunities of the coca leaf in contemporary regulatory space.”
